If you want to see what happened in the last episode, check it out here on the official site. Lucas also sings in this episode, a song called ‘Big Mistake’, with a very modern sound.
Recently, ABC family released an interview where Lucas talks about his childhood dream-jobs, his favourite artists and more, check it out!
ABCFamily: Who are your musical influences? Who did you listen to growing up?
Lucas: I would say I have very different influences from what I listened to growing up. My parents were really into oldies and country with a little adult contemporary mixed in. So my house was filled with music from The Lovin’ Spoonful, (which I would say is an influence) to Garth Brooks, and also Michael Bolton… I cleaned to a lot of Michael Bolton on Saturday mornings.
My influences are from singer/songwriters like Jeff Buckley, Bob Dylan, Dave Matthews, and Andrew Bird, to avant-garde jazz greats like Pharaoh Sanders, Herbie Hancock, and Miles Davis. I also love dance music and enjoy mixing several genres through electronic devices. (Daft Punk, YACHT, DJ Shadow) When I listen to pop, it’s usually older artists like Michael Jackson, Elton John or The Beatles. In the hip-hop world, artists like Talib Kwali, Mos Def, The Streets, Beastie Boys and Eminem are favorites of mine. They inspire the edgier songs I write.
ABCFamily: At what age did you know you wanted to be a musician?
Lucas: The first time I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I answered, “A rock star, karate teacher and an archeologist.” All at the same time, of course. I think this was at the age of five. At the age of eight, I picked up my dad’s big classical guitar and couldn’t reach my fingers over the neck to play so my dad traded in his guitar to get me a small electric one. My family always had a piano in the house. My mom played and my sister took lessons. I just played by ear, which was a much slower process. In sixth grade, I started playing the drums and percussion in the school band, by then I had started a garage band, which led to many more through high school, where I tried to act my way through really knowing how to play any of the instruments in my house. I wrote my first song at the age of twelve, and I think that is when I really saw the dream as a reality. My friends and I played it over and over again while imagining ourselves rocking with a huge crowd at our feet.
ABCFamily: Who do you listen to currently? Who’s on your iPod? Music-wise which songs/groups/musicians are your guilty pleasures?
Lucas: I love finding new music so I’m constantly on the hunt for new and amazing talent. LA locals, K. Flay and Odd Future have caught my ear recently.
In Indie music: Black Dub, The Naked and Famous, Explosions in the Sky, Blood Orange, Rogue Wave, The Album Leaf, Tune-Yards, Daniel Johnston, The Raveonettes, City and Colour, Local Natives to name a few.
Also: Radiohead, Bjork, Robbie Robertson, Santagold, Nicki Minaj, Fugazi, Adele, Otis Redding, Taj Mahal, Frank Sinatra, Edith Piaf, Weezer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Laura Veirs, Jason Mraz. I could keep going. I listen to music pretty much all of the time, and I’m not one to listen to a particular song or CD over and over again. I love shuffle.
I’m not sure if I have any guilty pleasures for music. I’m proud to listen to anything as long as it’s good.
ABCFamily: What instruments do you play?
Lucas: Primarily, I play guitar, piano and drums. However, I own a lot of different instruments and try to play as many as I can, though often with much difficulty. The list includes: bass, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, violin, oud, harmonica, accordion, melodeon, the Theremin, various incarnations of the synthesizer, reed organ, percussion instruments like, the Djembe, Cajon, the bells, jaw harp and bongos, as well as various electronic toys that make for interesting “instruments” when making weird music. Don’t be fooled; I’m much more of a collector than a prodigy.
ABCFamily: What musical artist would you love to meet and or perform with?
Lucas: This is a hard one. As I’ve previously listed, I’m a big fan of a lot of musicians, many of which I didn’t mention here because I didn’t want to fill 20 pages of great artists. It’s hard as a musician to answer the ‘favorite’ questions because at any given day it could change (and does most indefinitely). It matters what mood I’m in. A lot like when I choose the music I listen to. It directly correlates with my current emotional state. What’s my state right now? I would love to work with Justin Timberlake. He hasn’t made any music for a few years, and I think it’s time for another album. I don’t find myself listening to his music often, but I admire his talent and feel like we would mesh well in a studio setting.
